Rowney Antique
Artists watercolor paint box

This fine antique watercolor box by G. Rowney was made around 1880-1890

The label is particularly colorful in the Victorian fashion.

Rowney labels of this time were the most colorful and their watercolour boxes are quite popular for that reason

The paint tray has 14 slots for fine watercolor paint blocks.
There are total of 18 paint blocks with the box

This box has a several of worn blocks that appear to be Rowney and
the rest are various other makes from the late 1800's .
Many of the antique paint blocks are nearly whole while others are used.

In addition there partial piece a Chinese ink stick in a glass mixing bowl on the left side of the box.

The rectangular pallette fits the box perfectly and is a Rowney Pallet of the time. - See below
It has some crazing and a few small chips but in good overall condition.

There are two round porcelain palettes in the bottom drawer , one with the Rowney name on the back.
In the top there is a water glass, these probably being later additions.
In addition there are:
  • The Brass Key that works the lock.
  • The original pin that holds the bottom drawer close.
  • There are two brushes probably newer than the box.
  • There is a nib and a few pieces of conte' crayon.
On the bottom the previous owner has written "Leslie Russell"

This is a wonderful Victorian Paint kit with two trays the paint and the pallet that lift out to reveal storage space for pencils and supplies.

The bottom drawer opens to reveal several items and is a good place to store small sketch paper.
The whole outer box is made of solid Mahogany- the inside is fitted with boxwood.

There are some ink stains on the top of the box and a few paint stains here and there inside; all lending authentic character to this over 100 year old antique.

A beautiful Trade card in the top of the box is one of the moste colorful of any in the late 1800's

A great piece of art history & a wonderful gift for an artist!
