WHATMAN Hand Made wove paper 1759-1760
 
This is believed to be one of the first uses of genuine wove paper in Europe.
 
 
Right is a partial watermark : the letter"W" for Whatman
The W is approximately 11 mm wide at the widest- top w
It stands alone and is correct for how J Whatman Sr. watermarked his papers.
This is a watermark for J Whatman Sr.

Edward Capell (Editor). 1st printing
Title page shown.
appearing on page 35 of the section Edward III by Shakespeare.
Some copies show partial Whatman watermarks - showing the manufacture of this wove paper was by the Whatman company at the Turkey Paper Mill.

This copy of the book has all wove paper in it.
   
ANTIQUE WHATMAN PAPER :
 
J WHATMAN Creswick Hand Made Rough c.1930
A toned paper called "Imitation Creswick" because it was Whatman's version of Thomas Creswick's style of paper after it was no longer produced when he passed in 1840 .
Now this paper was just called Creswick.
 
 
 J WHATMAN Hand Made Watercolor Paper mid 1940s? - Creswick Buff
This paper came from a Swiss medical school where students were required to draw anatomy.
 
A toned paper called "Creswick"
 
"HAND MADE" appears in watermark
in addition to " J Whatman England"

WHATMAN Creswick 1959:
A toned paper called "Creswick" Watermark "J WHATMAN 1959"
This paper does not show the"HAND MADE" watermark as does other versions.
The photo of the watermark shows the paper darker than it appears on the surface. The surface is Cold or Not Hot pressed.

is watermarked J WHATMAN TURKEY MILL1824
 
This paper was made in the Turkey Mill then owned by the Hollingsworth family
 
Shown pages of Hogarth prints- loose sheets that nearly match from a book of the time-"The Election"

Made at the Balston & Co owned Springfield Mill. (this is known because it does not say Turkey Mill)
 
At this time there were two mills/ companies using the Whatman trademark.
 
 
In 1859 Balston & Co. bought the sole rights to the Whatman trademark from the Hollingsworth family.

This thin blue wove texture paper from around 1930
is watermarked J WHATMAN HAND MADE.
This is a page from a book of Whatman paper samples made in 1931: "J.Whatman" by W.L.R. Balston Ltd.
 
Please note these watermarks are photographed with light coming through the opposite side. The paper shadows so it appears much darker and more gray than it does under normal reflected light.

This wove texture paper is a 140 pound Not Pressed Creamy White Watercolour Paper 20th century
is watermarked "HAND MADE J WHATMAN B"
 
Please note these watermarks are photographed with light coming through the opposite side. The paper shadows so it appears much darker and more gray than it does under normal reflected light.

 J WHATMAN Hand Made Paper 1923-Blank
A huge Double Elephant size paper 28 by 41.5 inches
 
This blue wove texture paper CP or Not pressed
it feels to be 100 pound weight
linen fiber was used as part or all of the content in pre 1940's papers
 
It is watermarked "HAND MADE J WHATMAN 1923 ENGLAND"
The size and kind of paper that was used for architectural drawings
for ships (like the Titanic), bridges and buildings.

 J WHATMAN Hand Made Watercolor Paper 1956 - white- Blank Paper
It is watermarked "HAND MADE J WHATMAN 1956 ENGLAND"
A 90 pound weight paper with a rough texture. It appears to have a partial linen content.
This is part of several various sheets I acquired in the late 1990's from a New York vintage paper supplier
