- A watercolor painting
by C.G. Lane 1881
-
- There is
a very feint signature" C.G. Lane" and date "81"
on the lower right hand corner. It was only visible in enhanced
photographs
-
- The
label on the back of the frame it came with said a copy "of
a painting by JMW Turner of the Lake of Constance, C G Lane...Gaddesden."
-
- C.G.
Lane was a accomplished watercolorist as well as quite a famous
cricketer!
-
- It
is believed it to be more in the style of Ruskin. Whether it
is a copy or not it is an accomplished work with great delicacy.
-
- It
was painted on a thin smooth wove texture paper while mounted
on a board. Paint exceeds edges of paper to the board. Board
has been removed when I restored the painting. It is 9 1/4 by
12 3/4 inches.
-
- Great Thanks
for information from Mathew Imms & Ian Warrel at the Tate
Gallery , London.
- for more information on C.G. Lane see :H.L. Mallalieu,
The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists up to 1920, Antique
Collectors' Club, Woodbridge 2002, vol.I, p.352:

-
- There
is a growing interest in works of unknown or little known artists.
- Wonderful
works can be found for pure enjoyment without all the distractions
of high value.
-
- I
have buy unknown artist pieces because of budgetary restraints
and as an artist I can sympathize with unknown artists.
-
- Still
I try to investigate the who, where, what & when of a painting.
-
- Link
to my paintings
-
-
- The
case of the Unsigned painting:
- "Near
Weir pool"
-
-
-
- THE
CASE OF THE NEAR WEIR POOL PAINTING:
- This
painting came with no signature, but a notation on the margin
of the mounting board reads:
- "
Near Weir Pool. Woo??oun? 98." (see below, also note part
of the un restored painting)
-
- Upon
removing the paper from the board, to restore the paper, I found
a notation on the board.:"Walkham"
-
- There
is a description place where River Walkham runs down through
a series of pools including Eggworthy Weir a long pool that often
holds sea trout from May.
-
- It
is Walkam River, Dartmoor National park in Devon!
-
- So
we know the where and the what. The when is 1898
due to note on the mount and the aging of the paper.
-
- The
who is still a mystery, for now. Check back for further information.
-
- P.S.
I found a photo taken in that area that could be where it was
painted. If
you are in that area
see if you can take a photo of the exact painting location &

- I have always wanted an original early painting done
in one of the National Parks of the States , in my budget
